E-Learning For Life

Fostering a professional learning community in Qatar and beyond

When was the last time you changed your password for your school account? After a very interesting discussion with Salah from QF IT he recalled their latest PD with an IT guy from Amercia and internet security. He encourages everyone to change their passwords at least once a term if not monthly. Some organisations have regulations which actually require people to change their passwords regularly, such as Charles Sturt University in Australia.

To protect your work and email please change your password now......... Press Ctrl,ALT, delete as if to log off or lock your computer. Under the icon which says "Lock Computer", you will see one which says, "change password".

Changing Passwords is important for adults. However, with students, it needs to be controlled. I regularly reset many per month for those who have forgotten their own. I suggest having two good ones and changing back and forth for those guys.

I spoke with Salah again about the suggestion from Phil and he too suggests it comes via the school as a QA policy as such. If you contact Julie that would be great.

Philip is right although I thought the message came out this school year. We could also ask IT support to make it a default that every 4 months a user is forced to change their password. A password 'change' reminder appears when a user logs on, before one can continue into the network, the user must change their password. I'll bring it up with Julie and EDS (IT Support) at our next meeting.

Good Idea, I might suggest to Salah that IT sends termly reminders to everyone.... thanks for the feedback.

I seem to recall an instruction which came from ITsupport about 18 months - 2 years ago. They explained the need to change our passwords regularly and stated that they would be REQUIRING us to do so on a regular basis. I don't remember the frequency they stipulated but it was something like termly. It's all been very quiet since then but, yes, this is a good idea!
