I thought I'd start this thread so that all of us MB recipients have a place to share steaming hot slices of juicy advice about using OS X!
To start the ball rolling I'll point out something which most of you may know already (but was news to one of my MacBook Pro - toting 11th graders this morning).
Any application in OS X which offer the facility to "print" (which is probably most applications, although not your trial version of MS Office!) allows you to save the thing you're printing as a .pdf file.
This is especially useful if you want to save something from a web page in .pdf format (maybe an online receipt, although Safari can take care of that for yo automatically). I use it when I want to email a finished document to someone (e.g. students) who does not need to edit the document. It's also a way to ensure that the recipient sees exactly what you see in your original document (e.g if you've created a doc in Pages and are exporting it to Word, you may lose some formatting choices). iWork allows you to export everything as .pdf anyway, but it's worth knowing that with OS X, you have the option to "Save as PDF" from ANY app which has a print facility.
To do this, open the print dialogue box and click on the bottom-left-most button (which is marked "PDF") then choose "Save as PDF" from the options (others of which you may find useful).
This has been a feature of the Mac OS for a long time and I find it much easier (and cheaper) than using Adobe Acrobat Professional, or any of the web-based conversion tools.
