Fostering a professional learning community in Qatar and beyond

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering what great books, teaching related, have people found. I'll start it off with a book that was given to me years ago. One of my personal favorites.

Learning & Memory: The Brain in Action, by Marilee Sprenger

Marilee started off as an educator and then she became interested in researching the brain. (She now has 12 books for sale On Amazon.) I have only read this one book of hers, however, I will probably order some of her newer books. This book is a very easy to read and applicable for educators.

Thanks for the info Roula. I did some searching, but couldn't find a link to her book. I will keep looking.

Here is another book. It took me months to read, as I would read a few pages then do a lot of reflection, re-read pages - reflect. Every teacher should read this book.

Title: Learner-Centered Teaching
Author: Maryellen weimer
Publisher: Jossey-Bass

Pulisher's Note: In this much needed resource, Maryellen Weimer-one of the nation's most highly regarded authorities on effective college teaching-offers a comprehensive work on the topic of learner-centered teaching in the college and university classroom. As the author explains, learner-centered teaching focuses attention on what the student is learning, how the student is learning, the conditions under which the student is learning, whether the student is retaining and applying the learning, and how current learning positions the student for future learning. To help educators accomplish the goals of learner-centered teaching, this important book presents the meaning, practice, and ramifications of the learner-centered approach, and how this approach transforms the college classroom environment. Learner-Centered Teaching shows how to tie teaching and curriculum to the process and objectives of learning rather than to the content delivery alone.

"Weimer primarily addresses faculty in higher education; however, her advice, experience, and beliefs about student learners applies to all teachers. Her practical text provides real-life examples, how-to suggestions, and supporting theories of teaching and learning. It is particularly applicable as a thought-provoking initial text for challenging our assumptions about teaching pedagogy.
While the text is simple and concise, it serves well as an often-used reference and guide to pedagogy and reflection." Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice - Book Review
