E-Learning For Life

Fostering a professional learning community in Qatar and beyond

At present we are using Chancery for our school management system, but we are using few of the resources for the educational side. I believe Chad and Sue Fletcher will be looking into one aspect.

In the meantime, the online learning committee is pursuing the study of course management systems. These are organized sites that add quality to education. They allow teachers to post resources for a course on the web as well as communication through web discussions and forums. This may be a way of gathering all of our blogs and wikis into one school site.

The advantage to this approach is that it allows access from anywhere in the world (if traveling or away from school). It also allows collaboration with other schools who have similar courses (IBO schools).

Hello Sam,

Oct 14th and part of the 15th, John Baker, President and CEO of Desire to Learn (D2L) will be at our college presenting their platform and answering any questions we might have. (I teach at the College of the North Atlantic, beside Qatar University.)

This is the platform the college is looking at right now, even though many of us have been dabbling with Moodle.

Hello Sam,

I can give you a contact: Glenn Thorne, VP Learning Resources, 495-2503. He's organizing everything.

(I am going, by I don't really know when it is specifically is being held.)

I hope to see you there.

I thought I should add a photo of myself, so you might recognize me when you see me. (I don't usually dress as an Asian samurai warrior.)

Thanks Rebecca!
Yes, we have been discussing this and exploring options for a year now. essentially we have a grass roots development of wikis using wikispaces that has been formalised by us purchasing a private label account. However we still want somethign that senior school can use for course management ans that we can use generally as a portal for learning that is perhaps more functionally private than the concept and practice of wikis.

what I use CMS for is mostly posting assignments, resources, and links in general but primarily for posting grades. Each student can privately see his or her marks for the course. parents too could have access if set up that way.

Yes, posting grades is what teachers and admin seem to want and need...however our Chancery system is meant to be able to do this. Maybe we should focus on getting that working correctly first? Especially now we have a new staff member working on increasing functionality of Chancery for us.
