Fostering a professional learning community in Qatar and beyond

Tomorrow at "The Great MacBook Giveaway!" I'll be offering to show some of what I know about using OS X Leopard. I anticipate that as we bring this platform into our classrooms and offices, there will be many opportunities for sharing experience.
I'd like to open up this thread as a starting point for those of you knew to OS X as well as providing an opportunity for others with Mac experience to share their wisdom with us.

Thanks for taking the time to help us potential neophytes. I'll forgive my initial wireless debacles since they supposedly replaced the laptop, but I am not sure I can live without the forward delete key :-)

Ah, yes, a common 'switcher' complaint (and a reasonable one). Here's the solution:
delete (mac) = backspace (PC)
delete (fn+delete) = delete (PC)

So you need to hold down the bottom-left-most key while pressing 'delete'.

Hope that's some help. It takes a while to adapt to a new 'environment', eh?

Just wanted to say thanks in advance to those of you who are prepared to share your wisdom as my Mac 'wisdom' dates back to about 1995 where it began and ended!

Well, OS X is very different from OS 9 (or maybe you were using "system 7" back then?) and Leopard has its fair share of differences from Tiger (the version I was using until October) but some things don't change....

I know that there are plenty of international KB options (and guides) although I don't have any experience of using anything other than English and French. Try some of the info on the Apple support site I linked to in the other thread.

I hope we can see how to use Bootcamp to run Windows and Mac platforms.

I have personally have had no need to install Windows on a Mac but, yup, you can go ahead and use bootcamp to install a copy of XP if you have one. Solutions such as VM and Parallels allow you to run both OS simultaneously, if you want to.
Some tests have shown Macs running some versions of Windows faster than some (comparable) PCs, but it's not something I've looked into, to be honest. I'm happy enough with OS X!

The + key in Safari's icon bar is "Add bookmark for the current page" (as with any button, leave the cursor over it for a couple of seconds and an explanatory text box will appear).

To maximise the browser window (or any window in any application), click on the GREEN circular button in the top left corner. The AMBER button sends the window to the dock, and the RED button closes the window (but does not necessarily "quit" the application).

Yup - that's the standard practice for any window. And, like I said, you can use the GREEN button to toggle between 2 sizes.
